Homework for Thursday Feb. 9, 2012 Reading Question from Chapter 3 in “Universal Design” Question #2:Considering the examples of instructional methods described in this chapter, what specific features of each allow for diversity among students with different learning styles and ability to demonstrate what they have learned? There are many different types of instructional methods that are talked about in this chapter. One of them is called Cooperative Learning and in this method students are put in groups and use peer buddies. For students with special needs, and those without, this gives them a chance to work with their peers and it increases social interaction. For the other students it gives them a chance to demonstrate their skills and help other students.
A second instructional method that was discussed in this chapter is called using Thematic Teaching Units. This is when the teacher gives instruction in different subjects, but they all relate to one another through the same theme. This allows students with different learning styles to be taught in different ways (subject by subject) but it is all still related to each other because of the theme.
A third example of an instructional method mention in the reading is called Community-based Instruction. This form of instruction allows the teacher to design a particular lesson to fit the needs of a student if sh/he feels that the lesson does not fit the students learning style. The teacher can got to other classrooms or community members and bring them into the lesson so that all the students can benefit.
The last example I will discuss is the instructional method called the Learning Strategies/Study Skills Approach. In this method the teacher instructs and gives examples of all different ways to study for school. By the teacher demonstrating multiple ways of studying for one particular thing, it applies to all students’ learning styles. It also gives the teacher an opportunity to give students a chance to try out what they learned. There are several other examples given in the reading; however I believe that these were the best examples to discuss.
